Tankless Water Systems
Tankless water systems are the new wave of home energy efficiency. These systems are better for the energy efficiency of your home, because they are not constantly heating and re-heating one tank of water over and over again for your house to use. Instead they heat water on demand, which lowers energy costs tremendously.
These systems often called tankless water systems, tankless water heaters, instantaneous water systems, inline water systems, or on-demand water systems and they are growing in usage all over the world.
In some homes only one tankless water system is needed and in others there are several tanks installed. This will depend on the size of your home, the amount of water usage, and your need for hot water. The smaller systems throughout the house are called ‘point of use tanks’ and they are located far from the central water heater of the home. These systems not only allow for lower energy costs because you are not heating a tank of water over and over again, but you never run out of hot water, because the water is heated instantaneously and you don’t have to wait for the water tank to refill in order to have hot water.
How Tankless Water Systems Work
When the hot water tap is opened the tankless water system will activate the water flow, which triggers the heating system. This flow turbine sends a signal to a control board, which takes several factors into consideration; including the desired temperature setting that you have set the system for. This will then activate the gas or electric burner through an electronic ignition sequence. The water is heated as it flows over a copper heat exchanger. Once the tap is closed again the system shuts off and goes into a standby mode until the tap is opened again.
Benefits of Tankless Water Systems
A tankless water system is going to be more expensive at the start because of installation and switching from an old fashioned water heater, but in the long run it is going to save you money every month on heating. It also is a small system and takes up less space than a conventional water heater does. They can often be mounted on a wall. Plus, since the tank isn’t storing any water you don’t have to worry about the risk of water damage if something goes wrong with the unit, like you do with a traditional water heater.
With a tankless water system you can also easily set up a water filtration system for your home. This means that not only will your water be hot on demand, but you can rest assured that it is clean and save for drinking, cooking with, and bathing in.
Tankless water systems are dependent on water flow for temperature. This can take some getting used to for people who have only ever had a water tank system. If water flow is a concern it often works better to have several water systems throughout the house, rather than one main tankless system.
